elcome to the first in a series on getting organized. I love coming up with new and creative ways to organize my goodies and I thought it would be fun to share some of them with you. I’m open to your ideas, suggestions and comments so please feel free to send me an email anytime. My email address is at the end of this article. This month I’m going to show you how to create a ribbon holder. It’s actually going to end up being hybrid because I’m printing some paper from the ‘Dream. Create. Inspire.’ Kit and will adhere it around the base of the ribbon holder.
I don’t know about you but I have TONS of ribbon around my studio. It’s hard to keep them organized and they are something I use all the time. I asked my husband for some help in building a ribbon holder. The supplies you’ll need are nominal and you can make many of these for under $20. If you or your husband doesn’t have woodworking tools it shouldn’t be a problem because you can look in the yellow pages and find a local woodworker or cabinet shop that can whip these things out in no time flat. And most of them should have some scrap wood lying around so it won’t cost much either!
Here is a photo of our finished project (right).
SUPPLY LIST:
- 3/8” Wooden Dowel 36” Long
- Wooden Base with 3/8” Hole Drilled in the Center.
- Paint (Unless of course you want to go for the natural wood look)
- Sponge Brush
- Printed Paper (or store bought)
- Glue (for the paper)
- Wood Glue (Elmer’s works too)
- Paper Trimmer
- Paper Plate (to put paint on)
- Old Newspaper
- Wooden Dowel Topper
- Ribbon
Below is a photo of all my supplies together.
DIRECTIONS:
My husband used a router on the edges of the base but this isn’t a necessary step. Square would be just as effective. My base is about 5” square and 1.5” deep. This will keep your ribbon holder from being tippy when you’ve got all your spools of ribbon on it after it’s finished.
1. First thing you’ll want to do is glue one end of your wooden dowel into your wooden base. As your glue is drying you’ll want to make sure your dowel is staying straight. Check it every 10 minutes or so until it is solid and the glue is dry. Wipe off any excess glue that comes out of your hole with a damp paper towel.
2. While your glue is drying you can print out your paper or choose a paper you want to use. I used the black paper from the “Dream. Create. Inspire.” Kit called SP_DreamCreateInspire_Paper04.
3. Now we can start painting our project. Be sure to lay old newspaper or a brown paper bag below your project so you don’t get your paint on anything but the project. Using your sponge or brush apply paint liberally to your project. You might have to apply a couple of coats to get good coverage. Wait for it to dry 30 minutes or so in between coats.
Here’s my project after I’ve got it painted. I sprayed spray on glitter over my project just to give a glimmering effect but you don’t have to do this if you don’t want to.
Wait for the paint and/or spray to dry completely.
4. While you’ve got your paint out you need to paint the wooden dowel topper. This topper will go on the upper end of your wooden dowel. It is there for your protection so you don’t accidentally get the dowel poked into your eye and you’ll remove it each time you add or remove spools of ribbon. I painted my topper black and sprayed it with glitter spray as shown in the photo to the right.
5. Using your paper trimmer cut your paper into long strips. We’ll wrap the paper around the base and adhere it with glue.
Here’s my base painted, glitter sprayed onto it, and my paper wrapped around the base and glued on.
6. Once your project is completely dry feel free to add your spools of ribbon. The really cool thing is that you can move this around as you need to. I love mine. I have several of them now sitting at the end of my scrapping table right where they are easily accessible.
NEXT MONTH:
In the next issue we’re going to work on organizing our photos. I’ll be showing you how to create a custom photo box and dividers. I’m really looking forward to this project!
CREDITS:
All the printables this month were created using the “Dream. Create. Inspire.” Kit created by ScrapProfessor and Tallula Moon Designs who both design at ScrapProfessor.com.
This kit is FREE with this issue of Scrapbook Dimensions Magazine so be sure you download the kit.
