I’ve had a package of Ranger alcohol inks sitting in my scrap room for months now and never really knew what to do with them. So I decided to dust off the package and figure out something. Since they need a slick surface I thought transparency was in order. I printed out a few transparencies on my LASER printer, line art and overlays work really well for this. If you don’t have any line art or digital overlays that’s okay. The one that I used on the example card was an image that was on a background paper that started out like this.
background paper by Emily Powers - Art Nation Blossom
I selected certain pieces of the flowers from the background using the Magic Wand tool and copied and pasted them into a new blank, transparent background at 300 dpi then I turned the image black. Go to Image>Adjustments>Threshold and move the slider all the way to the right to 255 and then print it out.
I experimented with inking on both the printed side and non-printed side of the transparency. The printed side seemed to contain the drops of ink better because of the slight ridges of printing but other than that there was no big difference. I did not purchase the felt ink daubers that you’re supposed to use with the inks, so I just cut little pieces of white felt and used those. I dropped the different colors onto the transparency being careful to somewhat stay inside the lines. Just keep playing around and dabbing the different colors onto the transparency until you get the desired look (whatever that may be).
My end result is a very simple but elegant card. After I was done inking the transparency, I inked around the edge with the felt and on the white cardstock behind the image I used some Glimmer Mist spray very lightly. I attached the transparency to the white cardstock with 2 black brads hidden in the flowers and then glued that to a base card.
